I created beautiful spaces as a kid. Not magazine-beautiful or Instagram-beautiful. Instead, allowing my imagination to work with what I had available to me, I would rearrange and repurpose. I would create new spaces and nooks. Beautiful to me. In the end, I would have something that felt entirely new, even though it was within the same space I already had. It was an amazing feeling. That feeling of brand new, but in such a resourceful way.
I remember getting that same feeling when my mom would rearrange the furniture in a room of the house. Same room, same furniture, new arrangement, it felt like a new room. Words I can use to describe that experience for me; fresh and expansive. With just a bit of intention and work, the world was renewed, by our own hands.
This is much like the view I take on career. I don’t have enough fingers to count the number of times I wanted to resign from my job, for both big and little reasons. I mean, give me one hormonal day and I’d likely rack up at least five moments of “I’m over this.”
I was someone who had a great-on-paper career, but it started to feel not so great. I did the traditional things, looking outside of myself and outside of the company, trying to find where I could run to. I was met with obstacles in every direction. It wasn’t until I decided to work with what I had that everything changed for me. I rearranged my career, I remodeled my role. I breathed life into it with what I had available to me, fresh and expansive.
Not until Universe called me clearly into entrepreneurship did I resign. And, even in that move, I was so much more ready. You see, when you work with what you have, you ultimately do a lot of work on yourself. Work that allows for you to define who you are, what you want, create boundaries, and advocate for yourself and your career. Without that work, you simply end up running to the next thing, carrying all of your baggage with you.
I’m not saying that you will never leave your role or organization. I am saying that you have the option to revive your career from right where you are. Your first plan of attack does not need to include a new role, a new org, a career pivot. If any of those are your path, let them reveal themselves to you energetically. Up-level your energy from right where you are and Universe will match you. Work with what you have and your next steps will be revealed to you.
I created Soul-Led Career to help folks who are in great-on-paper careers to work with what they have so that they can be aligned with what they want. To ultimately create careers at their own hands that fulfill them and support their lives. To have a soul-led career is to have a career that is in full alignment with you and the life you desire.
One of my clients, a leader in the educational space, did exactly that. She came to me unhappy with her role and unclear as to whether she should stay or go. Parts of it she loved, much of it caused her frustration. In our work together, she gained so much peace with who she was and what she wanted. Within the role she was in, she made adjustments to protect her peace and create impact. She identified what she wanted and sourced ways to start stepping into that vision from where she was. And, while she had the opportunity to stay within the system, she was offered an even more aligned role in a different system. From "do I stay or do I go" to having two aligned options to choose from.
She worked with what she had. She up-leveled. The Universe matched her in more ways than one.
To this day, I continue to make beautiful spaces where I am. As a kid we moved from a house, to an apartment, to a duplex, to a house. I created spaces in each one. With my partner, we’ve moved into a house, and then another, and then another. Beautiful spaces created. My life continues to carry forward, each vision building from the one before it. And, in each space, working with what I had, creating beautiful spaces. Finding a vision and doing with it what I can from where I am.
Speaking of, I’ve got a new vision pulling on my heart. In my big overall vision, it’s easy for me to see myself in a wooded area. A smaller home, so many trees, sounds and smells of nature, windows to include me in the wilderness even from the protection of my home. In my present day, I don’t know where that home exists, where that place in the woods is. What I do know is the feeling that I want to feel from it. With that, I’m considering turning a space outside of my current home into a sanctuary, of sorts. The suburban design of my neighborhood isn’t ideal for this project, but it’s more than good enough. Embracing this outdoor space, I can begin to create a space in which I can become more in tune with the cycle of nature, its beauty and rawness, from right where I am.
We can do that with your career. With a four-focus framework, Soul-Led Career, will equip you with all of the tools you need to create career satisfaction now and through every evolution of you. It will change the way you relate to work, transforming your experience from great-on-paper to feels great, inside and out.
