Tarot spreads are the way in which a reader lays the cards out to interpret them for the querent. They are a “structured” way of asking questions of the Tarot. A layout gives the reader the opportunity to segment a request into parts, to address the querent’s topic in an intentional way.
I am a coaching/consultative style reader (not predictive/psychic). I like to empower clients with information and options. Rather than focusing on fate-based questions (will, when, should, is, where, who), I create spreads with choice-based questions (what, how, why). Choice-based questions empower, rather than disempower. Powerful questions allow for us to fully engage the Tarot.
Thankfully, the Tarot spread world doesn’t have a lock on it. While many spreads already exist, with some classic spreads going waaaaay back, new spreads are being created constantly. Even the classics have a number of variations. With that, anyone can create them, and oooooh do I.
I lend a lot of attention to choosing or creating a spread for a reading. To say it another way, I geek out hard during the querent’s reading intake process. The spread is important as general questions will provide general answers. And, general answers aren’t helpful. I aim to get to the root of their topic which is often a bit different than their original question. Once discovered, I assign an empowering spread to lend maximum insights. I LOVE THIS PART! It’s so inquisitive and creative. I LOVE IT! (I love it, she whispers.)
Another great thing about spread creation, it allows for a reader to create any spread for any topic. Endless possibilities. Eeeeee!
