Helpful tool! How well do you really know yourself?
I’m usually not one for acronyms. Two reasons come to mind. One, my HR career. An endless supply of legal acronyms. ENDLESS. Two, when it comes to the self-care, self-love, self-discovery space, I tend to find them too cutesy. However, today I am willing to set aside my aversion to acronyms, because I find this one to be helpful and the content relatable.
An important part of the client journey in my coaching package happens in phase two called “Who you are.” You cannot get to where you want to go if you don’t understand who you are, why you behave the way you do, and what you value.
This article from Psychology Today provides an excellent construct for self-discovery. The article entitled, “Know Yourself? 6 Specific Ways to Know Who You Are,” uses the acronym VITALS for an in-depth, yet easy and accessible, tool to nudge your self-discovery journey.
Life Mission and Meaningful Goals
The author, Meg Selig, addresses why self-discovery (self-knowledge) is important. She then expands on each letter of her VITALS acronym. I encourage you to grab a pen and paper and use this article as an opportunity to journal and expand your awareness of…you.
Soft warning… DO NOT journal these all at once. One, that can be overwhelming. Two, it will be advantageous to give each topic time. Time to unfold and time for you to reflect.
Until you become more self-aware, understanding what makes you tick, you’ll likely continue to find yourself stuck in a cycle or chasing a desire. Learning more about yourself is key to fulfillment and the achievement of values-based purpose-driven goals.
I’d love to hear from you if you try this! Dive in. Explore. And take care. 💛
